How to read this page
The methodology goes before the numbers, because a statistic you cannot check is just a claim with a decimal point. Four rules govern what appears here.
Every figure was fetched and read at its primary source, never taken from a summary. No agency blog is treated as a source. Australian data and overseas data are separated and labelled, so a United States finding never reads as an Australian one. And forecasts are not statistics, so projections were excluded even where they came from reputable firms.
Anything that failed those tests was cut rather than softened. Section 04 lists what went and why, because the exclusions tell you more about whether to trust the rest than the inclusions do.
Australian data
All five come from Roy Morgan Single Source or the Australian Bureau of Statistics: published sample sizes, published survey periods, and figures you can verify in about a minute.
of Australians aged 14+ used AI tools in an average four weeks. That is 13.6 million people.

When AI search arrived in Australia
Both dates come from Google's own Australian blog, which is the primary source for what is available here and when. Useful for dating any claim about how long AI answers have been affecting Australian search.
AI Overviews rolled out Australia-wide
Google announced the national rollout on its Australian blog, after local testing began the previous month.
AI Mode launched in Australia
Google's Australian blog reported early testers asking questions nearly three times the length of a traditional search.
Overseas data, labelled as such
No Australian study has measured what an AI answer does to click-through rates. The best available research is from the United States and from global query sets, and we are not going to relabel it as Australian to make this page look more complete than it is.
click rate on search results when an AI summary appeared, against 15% when it did not. Only 1% clicked a link inside the summary itself.
United States only. 900 US adults, 68,879 Google searches analysed, of which 12,593 produced an AI summary. Browsing behaviour tracked, March 2025.
of tracked Google queries returned an AI Overview, a 58% increase across the preceding twelve months.
Global tracked query set across nine industries. BrightEdge does not publish the sample size, so treat this one as directional.
as valuable, by conversion rate, is the average visitor arriving from an AI search source compared with the average organic search visitor.
Over 500 digital marketing and SEO topics. Semrush notes its forward projections are extrapolations, though the conversion comparison itself is measured.
What we left out, and why
These are figures we found, checked and rejected. They are circulating widely, so if you have seen them quoted elsewhere, here is what happened when we followed them back.
Cut
32% of Australians use AI for shopping advice
The figure appears in summaries of the Australia Post eCommerce Report 2026, but the report's own 32% refers to shoppers who would switch retailers for out-of-home collection. Two unrelated statistics had been merged somewhere upstream.
Cut
Gemini has 9.1 million and Copilot 5.4 million Australian users
Attributed to Roy Morgan by several agency blogs. Roy Morgan's actual published figures for the same period are 4.9 million and 4.0 million.
Cut
12% of Australians use AI as their primary way to find information
We could not locate a primary source. Every trail ended at an agency blog citing another agency blog.
Cut
64% of Australians have seen an AI Overview
Same problem. No published methodology and no identifiable original research.
Cut
29% of adults will run a daily AI-summarised search in 2026
This is a Deloitte forecast for developed markets, and a forecast is not a measurement. Reputable, but it does not belong on a statistics page.
If you spot an error on this page, or a figure that has been superseded, tell us and we will correct it. A number without a working source and a date gets cut, not softened.
